After a decade in captivity, Lydia Simon and her three children have finally gained freedom. Troops from the North-East Operation Hadin Kai rescued the Chibok schoolgirl on Wednesday in Borno State, Nigeria. Lydia was one of the 276 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram from a secondary school in Chibok on April 14, 2014. Identified as abductee number 68, she escaped from her captor's camp in the Mandara Mountains. Lydia then surrendered to the 82nd Division Task Force Battalion soldiers in Gwoza.

At the time of her rescue, Lydia was five months pregnant. This liberation comes exactly 10 years after the mass Chibok abductions. While some girls escaped or got rescued, over 100 were freed through negotiations. Lydia's freedom represents hope for the remaining kidnapped students.
