The Federal Government of Nigeria has recently suspended 16 Togolese universities temporarily from degree accredited and evaluation due to a new fake degree certificate endemic. The event that prompted the suspension action taken by the Ministry of Education of Nigeria was as a result of an investigative report by a Daily Nigerian Newspaper reporter titled "How Daily Nigerian Reporter Bagged Cotonu Varsity Degree In 6 Weeks".

In the investigative report, the journalist exposed how he obtained a certificate and transcript from a francophone university. The certificate issued by the university bore an authentic scan code of ESGT, which is accredited by Benin Republic and Nigeria. In his certificate, it was also stated that he had spent 4 years in the university instead of 6 weeks. The reporter proceeded to use that same certificate to apply for the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), a mandatory, yearly paramilitary and patriotic training undergone by Nigerian graduates and foreign students.

Unfortunately, the fake result and certificate were not easily detected by Ministry of Education. The certificate was approved and he (the journalist) was successfully mobilized for the National Youth Service. Finally, the investigative report came out and to the amazement of the officials in the Ministry of Education, they were beguiled by the fake results. This resulted in the suspension and further investigation of certain francophone universities. Below are the 16 Togolese universities affected by te suspension:

Atlantic African Oriental Multicultural (ATAFOM) University International
African Union University, Togo
African University of Science Administration and Commercial Studies, IAEC University Togo
